Higher Abelian Quantum Double Models are quantum spin systems defined in any finite dimension that cannot be described by Landau's theory. In this talk, we will offer a pedagogical introduction to the formalism of these models, focusing on the characterization of the topological ground state subspace. Additionally, we will explore their connections to recent problems in condensed matter physics and quantum computation.
