Dienstag, 24.04.2018: Geometric estimates for multiplicities

The classical limit multiplicities problems deals with the behaviour of multiplicities of representations for sequences of congruence subgroups in an arithmetic group. The problem can be generalised to the collection of all lattices in a Lie group, and recent progress has been made for this which give a complete coarse solution to this problem for many Lie groups. The main tool is a notion of convergence for locally symmetric spaces, which has many other applications. I will discuss these results, the limits of this approach and possibly some topological problems analogous to the limit multiplicity problem.
