On Wilson cloud chamber problem
The Wilson cloud chamber problem concerns the following question: How can a quantum particle imprint a Newtonian track in a cloud chamber (e.g., a single nearly straight-line in the absence of the external fields)? Despite the widespread belief to the contrary, it was not solved by N. Mott in 1929. Recent contributions have undoubtedly improved the situation, but the solution not plagued by the well-known measurement problem remains elusive.
Starting from a few-particle model of the cloud chamber, and realistic interaction potentials, we will arrive at a mechanism for the formation of (straight line) tracks in the cloud chamber. Using Bohmian mechanics we will explain why we don't see multiple tracks, but rather a single definite track per emanating alpha particle. We will also show that the cloud chamber does indeed reveal the (Bohmian) position of an alpha particle up to a certain accuracy.
