Donnerstag, 13.03.2025: Supersymmetric quantum mechanics and Morse theory

Lucy Dhumeaux (University of Birmingham, UK)

Supersymmetry is a physical theory of a spacetime symmetry between bosons and fermions. Morse Theory is a mathematical tool in differential topology relating the topology of a manifold with the critical points of a function defined on it. These two seemingly different theories are profoundly linked through the structure of the SUSY Hamiltonian and a Morse function’s critical points. In this talk we establish some of their connections, following Edward Witten’s seminal paper, “Supersymmetric quantum mechanics and Morse theory”. This will lead us to a proof of the Morse inequalities using the cohomology of supersymmetric ground states.
