Information for International Students

General Information

There are general webpages by the University of Tübingen and the Faculty of Science for international students.

More information specific to the Department of Mathematics is below.

Courses offered

  • The official list of all courses offered by the University each semester is on ALMA.
  • An informal list of courses offered by the department of Mathematics each semester is on this webpage, on the right. Look for  ''Courses offered in WS...'' or "Courses offered in SS..."  This list might be subject to changes before the start of the semester.
  • In the informal list, you can find how many credits (ECTS) each course is worth and whether the lecture will be held in English or not.
  • There are module handbooks with the description of all courses offered by the department. Most of them are in German, but those for the Master of Science in Mathematics and in Mathematical Physics are in English as well.

Course registration

  • For most courses offered by the department of Mathematics you do not need to formally register yourself to attend them. You can just show up to the lectures.
  • Some lecturers might use tools such as Ilias, Moodle or URM to manage their courses. This is communicated by the lecturers themselves, for example on the webpages of the course.
  • You will need to register yourself formally for the exams. More information about this here.

Master of Science in Mathematics

Some useful information if you plan on doing your Master in Mathematics in Tübingen, for example as part of the double degree agreement between Trento and Tübingen. The complete information is contained in the module handbook.

Modules

  • Each  module belongs to one or more of the following areas of specialization: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Differential Geometry, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Mathematics and Optimisation or Stochastics. You can find this information in the module descriptions of the module handbook.
  • The modules are also subdivided into those of type  Mathematical General Education (more basic) and of type Specialisation Modules (more advanced). You can see this information in the module handbook.

Study Plan

Each student should construct their study plan as follows.

  • Main area of specialization:  the student chooses a main area of specialization among Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Differential Geometry, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Mathematics and Optimisation or Stochastics.
  • Study focus: 21 credits in total:
    • 18 credits from courses of type Specialization Modules from the Area of Specialization of the student. The courses should have a written or oral examination at the end.
    • 3 credits  from a seminar in the Area of Specialization of the student.
  • Advanced Knowledge in Mathematics: 30 to 33 credits in total.
    • The modules in this part should also belong to an area of specialization different from the main area of specialization of the student.
    • At least 27 credits should be obtained from modules with a written or oral exam at the end.
    • At least two areas of specialization different from the main one of the student should be covered by modules worth at least 9 credits.
    • At most 18 credits can come from modules of the type Mathematical General Education.
  • Elective Specialisation: 27 to 30 credits in total.
    • The courses can be choosed  from all those available at the University of Tübingen, as long as the overall profile of the study plan is meaningful.
    • At least 9 credits should come from courses of a department other than Mathematics, but the courses should not come from more than two departments different from Mathematics.
    • The grades obtained in the courses in the Elective Specialization are not counted towards the final grade.
  • Scientific Work: 39 credits.
    • Introduction to Scientific Work: 9 credits. This is preparatory work towards the master's thesis project.
    • Master Thesis: 30 credits.

Submitting the study plan

You can find the forms for your study plan here.

You should discuss the study plan with your mentor, and structure it in a way that it respects the guidelines above. After you fill the study plan, both you and your mentor should sign it and then send it to the Head of the Examination Board for the M.Sc. of Mathematics for the approval and final signature.

Double Degree with Trento

If you are a double degree student from Trento, you can also use the courses from Trento for your study plan in Tübingen, as long as they fit in the above guidelines. You should discuss this with your mentor, who is usually the International Coordinator of the department of Mathematics.
